Understand your credential without assuming equivalency
South Korea’s school system comprises six years of elementary school, three years of middle school and three years of high school. A university bachelor’s degree generally takes four years, although some programs have a different duration. These reference points help you present your academic background: they do not create automatic equivalency in Canada.
The examples of McGill University and Université Laval show why you need to review the requirements of each institution and program.
| Education in South Korea | Reference published by the Canadian institution | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Secondary school credential | McGill lists the South Korean secondary school credential among those assessed for undergraduate admission. | The fact that a credential is assessed does not guarantee admission. |
| Twelve years of pre-university education | Université Laval also requires one year of postsecondary studies for undergraduate admission. | Do not assume direct entry based solely on a high school diploma. |
| Haksa | Université Laval lists this as the minimum credential for a master’s degree. | Specific program criteria still apply. |
| Soksa | Université Laval lists this as the minimum credential for a doctoral degree. | This reference point does not replace an admission decision. |
At Université Laval, preparatory studies may be required in some cases for programs that are not subject to enrolment limits. To compare your options, start with the level of study you are aiming for and the prerequisites required. Avoid presenting your own conversion of grades as a universal Canadian scale: the examples above describe institutional practices, not a national rule.

Gather academic documents and translations
Prepare the diplomas and transcripts for the studies you have completed, then compare them with the list of documents required by each institution. An application may need to show more than the name of your credential: prerequisite courses and grades are also among the elements to be assessed.
Some South Korean school documents are available directly in English. Incheon’s education administration describes school completion certificates and transcripts in English. For its online service, it specifies, among other things, an English school completion certificate for graduates since 2012 and an English middle or high school transcript for people who enrolled starting in March 2014. These reference points do not describe every method of obtaining documents: contact your school or the relevant administration about your own academic history.
Next, distinguish between the university’s requirements and those of immigration. According to IRCC’s general guide, documents that are neither in French nor English must be accompanied by a translation that complies with the applicable instructions. You cannot translate them yourself, nor can a family member. An affidavit may also be required, depending on the translator’s qualifications.
Before having documents translated, check the instructions of each recipient separately, including those concerning the specific documents in your application.
Choose a language test based on your program
Your choice of test depends on the institution, program and any exemptions. Check these requirements before booking a test: a result that is sufficient for one university is not a standard for all of Canada.
For example, McGill sets a minimum of 6.5 on the IELTS Academic, with at least 6.0 in each component, for undergraduate admission. The university does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake. Also check for any exemptions and requirements specific to your program.
For a French-language study plan, Université Laval refers applicants to the TCF tout public if they have not completed their primary or secondary schooling in French. The result must be no more than two years old at the time of the admission application. Depending on the program and result, the test may affect admission, graduation or the requirement to take supplementary courses.
Universities and programs
Two StudyCanada profiles can help you start comparing the institutions used as examples in this guide:
- McGill University: Its official pages provide information about the assessment of South Korean secondary school credentials and undergraduate English requirements.
- Université Laval: Its tables provide academic reference points for South Korea and French-language requirements.
These links lead to institution profiles, not program offerings. They do not establish that applications are currently open or that a person is eligible.
For each program you are interested in, create a checklist with the required credential, prerequisite courses, language, documents, fees and applicable deadline. This will let you compare concrete requirements instead of assuming that two universities will assess your application in the same way.
Prepare for the study permit and instructions related to South Korea
A study permit application generally includes a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution and proof of financial support. In most cases, a provincial or territorial attestation letter is also required, unless an exception applies.
Since January 1, 2026, an exemption from this letter applies to programs leading to a master’s or doctoral degree at a public designated learning institution. It does not apply indiscriminately to all graduate studies.
In Quebec, where applicable, the attestation of issuance of the Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ) serves as the provincial attestation letter. Most students who are exempt from this letter must nevertheless obtain a CAQ. Check the exceptions and requirements that apply to your situation: the CAQ does not replace the federal permit.
IRCC indicates that the visa office in Manila serves the Republic of Korea. Its additional checklist IMM 5836, in its February 2026 version, mentions, among other things, a study plan, academic documents and police certificates. The certificate requirements apply to applicants aged 18 or older and to the countries or territories corresponding to the stays defined in the checklist.
Check the instructions that apply to your application, particularly for police documents and their translations, as well as the general guide and any local instructions. The documents to submit depend on your background; gathering them does not guarantee that the permit will be approved.
Proof of funds: distinguish thresholds from the total budget
Amounts published by the authorities are used to establish financial requirements: on their own, they do not represent the full cost of studying. Their effective date, territory and covered expenses matter just as much as the figure.
| Situation | Published amount for one person | What the amount covers |
|---|---|---|
| Outside Quebec, application submitted on or after September 1, 2026 | $23,448 CAD | Living expenses for the first year; tuition and transportation are additional. |
| Quebec, application submitted on or after January 1, 2026 | $24,617 CAD | Annual basic needs, including, among other things, settlement, transportation and health and hospitalization insurance. Tuition and round-trip transportation must also be covered. |
These figures are not directly comparable, because the expense categories differ. The applicable amount also varies according to family size. To prepare your budget, start with the amount that applies to your situation, then add the costs that are not included.
IRCC requires applicants to demonstrate that they have the necessary funds without relying on work in Canada. For a program lasting more than one year, you must also explain how the rest of your studies will be funded. A scholarship that covers only tuition is not, by itself, enough to demonstrate coverage of other expenses. The appropriate supporting documents depend, among other things, on the source of the funds and the person or organization contributing.
Biometrics and processing times: build a realistic timeline
Biometrics provided for a temporary residence application are generally valid for 10 years, and exemptions exist. Check whether you have been asked to provide biometrics again.
If required, book an appointment after receiving your biometric instruction letter. IRCC indicates that you must provide your biometrics within 30 days of receiving this letter. Check the date and instructions in the letter. IRCC lists a centre in Seoul. Booking is free, although there may be a fee for collection.
The federal fees consulted on November 5, 2026, are $150 CAD per person for a study permit and $85 CAD per person for biometrics, when required. A family fee cap may apply to certain applications submitted together. Other expenses may be added; check the fee list when you pay.
For study permit processing, use IRCC’s official tool and select the appropriate application type and country. The displayed processing time is an estimate, not a guarantee.
In your timeline, separate the time needed for admission, obtaining and translating documents, applicable attestations, and then submitting the permit application and providing biometrics. These are different steps, not a single processing time.
Look for scholarships without counting on them as secured
South Korea’s National Institute for International Education organized a 2026 selection for studies abroad, including master’s and doctoral studies. Canada is included in the funding schedules for this selection, which has conditions and is not automatic assistance.
In the 2026 campaign announcement, applications were to be submitted from May 7 to 20, and documents had to arrive by mail no later than May 21. These dates have passed; they are not a schedule for a future campaign. Check the NIIED’s new instructions, without assuming that another selection will be open.
University funding is another option. McGill lists entrance scholarships and need-based aid for international students, subject to the conditions of each program. These are not reserved for South Koreans. Check whether the funding you are considering applies to entry to the university or to ongoing studies, as well as its conditions and application process.
In your financial plan, distinguish between funding you are considering and funding that has actually been awarded and documented: neither an award nor full coverage is guaranteed.
Before departure: distinguish between an eTA, a letter and a permit
The documents required to enter Canada depend, among other things, on the traveller’s nationality, passport, mode of travel and circumstances. Living in South Korea is therefore not enough to determine which rule applies: check IRCC’s requirements for your own passport and trip.
When an electronic travel authorization (eTA) is required, it is normally issued with the approval of a study permit application submitted from outside Canada. Check the information you receive and the passport to which it is linked. An eTA does not replace a study permit and does not guarantee entry to Canada.
Similarly, the letter of introduction you receive after an application is approved is not itself the permit. Keep admission documents, financial evidence, and entry and stay documents distinct.
