From the Japanese school system to Canadian admission

The regular Japanese school pathway consists of six years of elementary school, three years of lower secondary school and three years of upper secondary school. At these levels, the school year generally runs from April to March. To prepare for a start date in Canada, identify when your final results will be available and ask each institution which interim documents it accepts.

Do not assume that a Japanese credential automatically has an equivalency that is valid throughout Canada. The following two examples show how requirements may be stated:

Institution Information for a Japanese academic pathway Limitation to keep in mind
McGill University The Kotogakko Sotsugyo Shomeisho, a certificate of completion of upper secondary school, is among the credentials reviewed. Mention of the credential does not guarantee admission or a national equivalency.
Université Laval For undergraduate studies, the Japan section specifies 12 years of pre-university schooling and 1 year of post-secondary studies. Preparatory schooling may be necessary if the requirements are not met; this option applies to non-quota programs.

This is an institutional comparison, not a ranking or a single Canadian assessment framework. For each program you are considering, review the required credential, any additional studies that may be necessary and the other admission conditions.

Documents and translations: plan for two recipients

Your university and immigration authorities review separate files. Start by asking the Canadian institution which transcripts and proof of studies it expects, when to submit them and in what format. If your final credential is not yet available, check which interim documents may be used.

At McGill, for example, a grading scale is required if it does not appear on the transcript. Transcripts that are neither in French nor English must be accompanied by a certified translation. These are McGill-specific instructions: consult the requirements of each university you are considering.

For a study permit application submitted from outside Canada, the guide from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada — IRCC — requires French or English translations of documents written in another language. If the translation is not completed by a certified translator in Canada, a compliant affidavit is required. The person submitting the application and their family members cannot translate the documents themselves.

A translation prepared for admission therefore may not meet all immigration requirements. Before ordering one, compare the instructions of both recipients and the document list that applies to your situation.

What proof of French or English proficiency should you prepare?

Choose a test only after choosing your institutions and programs: accepted forms of proof, scores and validity periods are not necessarily the same. Before booking a test in Japan, check which version and components are required and what result date range is accepted.

For undergraduate admission, The University of British Columbia lists, for example, a minimum of 6.5 on IELTS Academic, with no component below 6.0. For the Winter Session 2027/2028, results must be dated January 1, 2025 or later. The university also provides other ways to demonstrate English proficiency. This threshold is an institutional example: meeting it does not guarantee admission.

At Université Laval, a person who has completed a non-French-language academic pathway may be asked to take the TCF, depending on their situation. DELF or TEF results less than 2 years old may also be accepted if they include written expression. The required level depends, among other things, on the program. Therefore, do not assume that a particular test is automatically required of everyone who studied in Japan, or that a result accepted elsewhere will be sufficient at Laval.

Admission, attestations and study permits

A study permit is generally required for studies lasting more than 6 months, although exceptions exist. An application includes, among other things, a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution and proof of financial support. Admission and an IRCC decision are separate steps.

A provincial or territorial attestation letter is generally required. Since January 1, 2026, certain degree-granting master's or doctoral programs at a designated public institution are exempt. Anyone claiming an exemption must provide the requested proof. In Quebec, also check the temporary selection process for studies and the requirements concerning the Quebec Acceptance Certificate. An exemption from the federal attestation does not automatically eliminate Quebec's requirements.

Nationality and place of residence answer different questions. For air travel, a Japanese passport generally requires an Electronic Travel Authorization, or eTA, rather than a visitor visa. An eTA is separate from a study permit. If you live in Japan and hold another passport, check the entry requirements for your travel document and mode of travel.

Biometrics in Tokyo or Osaka: which timeline should you follow?

A visitor visa exemption associated with certain passports does not automatically exempt you from giving biometrics for a study permit application. IRCC provides for exemptions: check the rules that apply to your situation rather than assuming that collection is always or never required.

When fingerprints and a photo are requested, IRCC lists centres in Tokyo and Osaka. An appointment is required. IRCC indicates 30 days from receipt of the biometrics instruction letter to provide your biometrics; follow the instructions in your letter.

These 30 days apply to collection, not the decision on your permit. For application processing, consult IRCC's current tool and select the application type and place of submission. The displayed times are estimates: they are neither a maximum nor a guarantee.

In your schedule, keep separate steps for admission, translations, any required attestation, biometrics and permit processing. No fixed number of weeks can guarantee a decision before the start of term.

Proof of funds: Quebec and other provinces

The amount you must demonstrate depends, among other things, on where you will study, family size and the date of submission. The reference amounts below are for one person; they are not interchangeable.

Applicable framework and date Annual amount for one person Separate expenses
Outside Quebec, application submitted on or after September 1, 2026 23,448 CAD for living expenses Tuition and transportation
Quebec, application submitted on or after January 1, 2026 24,617 CAD for basic needs In particular, tuition and international transportation

The categories do not cover exactly the same items. In Quebec, basic needs include, among other things, establishment costs and health and hospitalization insurance: account for this scope to avoid double-counting. Check the scale in effect when you submit your application; do not assume these amounts will remain unchanged for a future application.

IRCC requires you to demonstrate resources for the first year and, for a longer program, explain how you will fund your entire course of study, without relying on work in Canada. Examples of proof include 6 months of bank statements and documents explaining the source of income. The list is not exhaustive: a scholarship, loan or family support requires appropriate supporting documents. Meeting the financial threshold does not guarantee approval.

Federal fees are separate from living expenses. As of November 5, 2026, IRCC lists 150 CAD for a study permit and 85 CAD for individual biometrics, when required. Also plan for other relevant expenses, including translations and any language tests.

JASSO scholarships: review the timeline early

The Japan Student Services Organization, or JASSO, publishes funding programs for earning a degree abroad. They are not automatically available to everyone living in Japan.

For undergraduate studies, the 2027 campaign guidelines apply, among others, to Japanese nationals and people authorized to reside permanently in Japan, subject to other conditions. Residence in Japan alone is not enough to establish eligibility. The campaign is also conditional on adoption of the 2027 budget.

This campaign covers studies beginning between April 2027 and March 2028. Under the regular route, registration closed on September 24, 2026, at 1 p.m., and the application submission deadline was October 1, 2026, at 1 p.m., Japan time. These deadlines had passed as of the verification date. JASSO also describes a separate prefectural recommendation route.

For the 2027 graduate program campaign, applications had to be submitted by October 8, 2026, at 1 p.m., Japan time. Applications generally go through a Japanese university, with an individual route available in certain cases. For a later campaign, consult its own conditions and deadlines: they are not necessarily identical.

Universities and programs: build your comparison

These three StudyCanada profiles can be starting points. They do not establish whether a particular program is open or what its current conditions are: consult the university's official information before preparing your application.

  • McGill University: its official information can help you review, among other things, how a Japanese upper secondary school completion certificate is assessed and the instructions for transcripts.
  • Université Laval: its Japan section can help you compare undergraduate academic requirements and the possibility of preparatory schooling.
  • The University of British Columbia: its English proficiency information provides an example of a threshold and validity period to review.

To compare your options, prepare a profile for each program with five elements: required credential and studies; prerequisites; language and accepted proof; documents and deadlines; funding. Then compare this information with the availability of your Japanese transcripts and the funding schedule.

The practical order is to first check academic and language eligibility, then prepare your application. After receiving an offer, identify the required attestations and immigration documents, gather proof of funds and check the estimated processing times. Assessment of your academic background, admission and authorization to study remain separate decisions.
