University of Waterloo equips science students with AI literacy and ethical training
The Faculty of Science at the University of Waterloo is building AI‑literate training that combines practical, ethical and research skills. Postdoctoral fellows Mohsen Rezaeian, Lucie Delobel and Amer Marwan El‑Samman describe how AI speeds research while human scientists remain essential for question design, hypothesis testing and ethical oversight.
Waterloo Science frames AI as a complementary research tool: it automates repetitive processing and helps identify patterns, freeing researchers to develop hypotheses, design experiments and interpret results. Postdoctoral fellows Mohsen Rezaeian, Lucie Delobel and Amer Marwan El‑Samman work on AI‑enabled projects across health, environmental and physical sciences. The Faculty also teaches ethical principles and critical verification to prevent overreliance on AI outputs.
