The program was co‑developed with the Manawan community to reflect local realities.

The Université de Montréal now offers a virtual reality training module for health students to practice care in Indigenous contexts. The immersive scenario places learners on an isolated road without cellphone coverage, transporting an Atikamekw patient who does not speak French or English to a Joliette hospital. The simulation was developed in collaboration with the Manawan community on site to capture local realities and strengthen cultural competence. The VR tool is designed to prepare future caregivers for logistical, communication and clinical challenges encountered when serving Indigenous communities.
