From the HSC to university studies: What is the equivalency?

The right starting point is the programme you actually completed, the credential you earned and the level of study you are aiming for. The examples below concern specific institutions: they allow you to compare their requirements, not predict an admission decision.

Your background Example published by a Canadian institution Question to ask
Bangladesh national curriculum and HSC The University of Toronto lists the HSC among its minimum first-year admission requirements. What prerequisite subjects and language proficiency evidence does the programme require?
Final year of secondary school in progress The University of Alberta distinguishes between available Grade 11 and Grade 12 results and the official HSC with final grades. Which documents can you provide when you apply, and which can you provide after earning your credential?
12 years of pre-university education For undergraduate studies from Bangladesh, Université Laval also indicates one successfully completed year of higher education. Is preparatory schooling necessary for the programme you have in mind?
Bangladeshi university degree For graduate studies, Toronto’s chart classifies, among others, a bachelor’s degree of at least 4 years, or a completed bachelor’s and master’s degree, in its bachelor’s-equivalent category. Do your degree and academic background also meet the criteria for your intended programme?

At Université Laval, the preparatory studies described comprise 30 credits over 2 sessions and apply to non-limited-enrolment programmes. This is not a rule that applies to all Canadian universities.

For an application following university studies, note the exact name of your degree, its duration, the institution that awarded it and the studies you completed. If you followed another curriculum in Bangladesh, ask the institution how it assesses it rather than assuming the HSC criteria apply.

Documents: Prepare two application packages

A university application and a study permit application go to different recipients. A transcript may be used for both processes, but the requirements for submission, translation or certification are not necessarily the same.

For the university, check which transcripts and degrees are required, which must be official and when to submit them. If you are still completing the HSC, distinguish between the results available for an early application and the final documents to provide later.

For a permit, the application package selected by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for Bangladesh refers to IMM 5850 from the Singapore office as the additional document checklist. In its February 2026 version, it requests, among other things, notarized copies of postsecondary degrees and transcripts, as well as a 1-page study plan. Review the application package and the instructions specific to your application when you submit it.

For IRCC, a document written in a language other than English or French must be accompanied by a compliant translation. If the translator is not certified in Canada, an affidavit is required. The applicant and their family members cannot translate the documents themselves. Check the institution’s instructions separately before ordering a translation.

English or French: Choose the right proof

Before booking a test, review the evidence accepted by the institution and programme: the test version, overall score, component requirements and validity period. Evidence accepted by one university is not necessarily accepted everywhere.

For undergraduate studies, the University of Alberta indicates, among other things, an IELTS Academic score of 6.5, with no component below 6.0. This is an institutional example, not a universal Canadian threshold; some programmes may have other requirements.

At Université Laval, someone with a non-French-language background may be asked to take the TCF. DELF or TEF results may also be accepted under certain conditions: the tests mentioned must, in particular, be less than 2 years old and include the written expression component. Check the programme requirements before choosing your proof.

Universities and programmes: Compare before choosing

These 3 StudyCanada profiles can help you start exploring the institutions mentioned in this guide. They are neither a ranking nor confirmation that a specific programme is open or that your application will be accepted.

  • University of Alberta: an example for examining the difference between provisional results and a final HSC, as well as an undergraduate English requirement.
  • University of Toronto: a point of comparison for requirements after the HSC and the assessment of university degrees for graduate studies.
  • Université Laval: a Québec example for examining academic preparation and French requirements.

For each programme you are interested in, prepare a fact sheet listing the required degree, prerequisite subjects, language proficiency evidence, documents, fees and deadline for your intended start date. Then confirm these details with the institution. Finally, compare the timeline with when your results will be available and the funding you have.

Admission, attestation and permit: Separate steps

For a study permit application, IRCC generally requires a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution. Exceptions exist: check whether they apply to your situation. Proof of identity and financial support are also among the items to consider.

A provincial or territorial attestation letter, called a PAL or TAL, is required in many cases. Since January 1, 2026, an exemption applies, among others, to applications for a master’s or doctoral degree at a public designated learning institution. It does not automatically extend to all graduate programmes.

For a plan to study in Québec, also check the temporary selection procedures and the Québec Acceptance Certificate, or CAQ. A federal PAL exemption does not automatically exempt you from Québec requirements. When a provincial attestation is required, the appropriate Québec document may fulfil this role.

Keep these decisions separate in your timeline: being accepted by an institution does not replace the applicable study authorizations.

Proof of funds: Separate living expenses, tuition and transportation

The amounts below apply to one person for 1 year. They do not represent the total cost of the plan and do not cover exactly the same expenses.

Destination and application date Annual amount indicated Expenses to add
Outside Québec, starting September 1, 2026 CAD 23,448 for living expenses Tuition and transportation
Québec, starting January 1, 2026 CAD 24,617 for essential needs Tuition and round-trip transportation from the country of origin

The Québec budget includes, among other things, settlement and hospital and medical insurance. The two figures alone therefore do not allow you to rank destinations by cost. Amounts also vary according to family composition: check the amount that applies to your application and submission date.

For a programme of at least 1 year, IRCC requires you to demonstrate the resources needed for the first year. If your studies last longer, you must also explain how the remainder will be funded, without relying on employment in Canada.

The IMM 5850 checklist requests, among other things, at least 4 months of financial history and an explanation of where the funds came from. Read the local requirements together with the general financial instructions and your document checklist: 4 months is not a universally sufficient period for all applications. A scholarship you are considering should not be confused with funding that has already been awarded.

Biometrics, medical exam, fees and timelines

When biometrics are required, IRCC lists centres in Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet. The department indicates a 30-day deadline after receiving the instruction letter to provide fingerprints and a photo. Booking an appointment is free; check services and availability before travelling. These 30 days apply to collection, not the decision on your permit.

Bangladesh is on the list of countries subject to immigration medical exams, but this does not mean that the exam is automatic for every Bangladeshi applicant. It may be required, among other circumstances, for a stay in Canada of more than 6 months following 6 consecutive months spent in one or more countries concerned during the year before arrival. Other situations may also make an exam necessary: follow the instructions that apply to your application.

As of the consultation date, the listed federal fees are CAD 150 for a study permit and CAD 85 for individual biometrics when required and payable. Budget separately for any translation, travel and medical exam expenses.

To build your timeline, first note the university deadline and when your documents will be available. Add any applicable provincial procedures, then the federal application and any biometrics or medical instructions. Consult IRCC’s processing time tool for a study permit application made from outside Canada and Bangladesh: the result is an estimate, not a guaranteed decision date.

Scholarships: An option for short-term mobility

Bangladesh is among the eligible countries for EduCanada’s Study in Canada Scholarships 2026-2027 call for applications. The programme concerns short-term study or research exchanges: it is not general funding promised for a full Canadian degree.

The criteria include, among other things, eligible citizenship, full-time enrolment at a postsecondary institution in an eligible country and payment of tuition fees to that institution during the exchange. Canadian institutions submit the applications.

The institutional deadline of March 31, 2026 has passed. Activities for eligible projects must end by September 30, 2027 at the latest; this latter date does not mean a new call is open. For your plan, also review the funding offered by the institution and programme you are considering, checking what it covers and its conditions before including it in your financial plan.
