From an Indian certificate to admission: what equivalencies apply?
The first question is not just “What Canadian credential is equivalent to my certificate?” but rather “Does my academic background meet the requirements of the program I’m considering?” The following examples illustrate the practices of 2 institutions; they are not a national rule or a ranking.
| Indian academic background | Example of a published requirement | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Class XII | McGill reviews, among other things, Class X results, Class XI and mid-Class XII transcripts, or the final Class XII certificate. | The university does not use predicted grades. |
| 12 years of pre-university education | For India, Université Laval indicates that students must complete 1 year of postsecondary studies in addition to 12 years of pre-university education. | Preparatory studies may be necessary; the pathway described is limited to non-quota programs. |
If you already have an Indian bachelor’s degree and are considering a master’s, check the requirements for the specific institution and program. The name of the degree alone is not enough to establish whether your application is eligible.
To compare your options, write down the exact name of your credential, its duration, the institution that issued it and the subjects you studied. Even when minimum requirements are met, admission is not guaranteed.
Find your path. Let’s make it clearer.

English or French: choosing the right test
Language requirements depend on the institution and program. Before booking a test, check whether your academic background allows you to demonstrate proficiency in another way, as well as which test version and results are required.
For undergraduate studies at The University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Vancouver campus, IELTS Academic is one possible option: the stated minimum is 6.5 overall, with at least 6.0 in each component. IELTS General is not accepted for this requirement. This threshold applies to the example cited; it does not apply to all Canadian universities.
At Université Laval, applicants with a non-French-language academic background may be asked to take the TCF after submitting their application for admission. Some DELF or TEF results may also be accepted: among other requirements, they must be less than 2 years old and include a written expression test. Program requirements remain decisive.
To avoid unnecessary costs, check with the institution about the validity of your results and how to submit them before registering.
Documents: keep the admission application and permit application separate
The same transcript may be used for both processes, but the required documents and formats may not be identical. Keep detailed academic documents and consult the instructions from each recipient.
For a study permit application submitted from India, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) refers applicants to the New Delhi office’s additional instructions, IMM 5818. The version consulted, dated February 2026, requests detailed transcripts and specifies that consolidated transcripts, or consolidated mark sheets, are not accepted in their place. Documents that are not in English or French must be accompanied by a certified translation.
To prepare your application, organize these items separately:
- the academic certificates, degrees and school or university transcripts requested;
- the letter of acceptance and required identity documents;
- proof of funds and, if applicable, documents from someone supporting you;
- provincial attestations and other documents applicable to your situation.
A medical exam or police certificate may also be required, depending on the circumstances. Local instructions supplement the general requirements: follow the checklist that applies to your application.
Study permits: the regular process and the special case of Quebec
A letter of acceptance is an important step, but it does not guarantee that you will receive a permit. An application generally includes proof of acceptance, identity documents, proof of funds and a provincial or territorial attestation letter, subject to applicable exemptions.
Since January 1, 2026, students enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program leading to a degree at a public institution have been exempt from this attestation letter. The exemption does not automatically apply to every graduate-level program.
For a program in Quebec lasting more than 6 months, a Quebec Acceptance Certificate for studies and a study permit are generally required, with some exemptions. The federal exemption from the attestation letter does not, on its own, remove Quebec requirements.
Beware of outdated information: the Student Direct Stream, which included India, closed on November 8, 2024. New applications follow the regular process. A Guaranteed Investment Certificate may still be an acceptable form of proof of funds, but it does not reopen the former stream.
Proof of funds: distinguishing the threshold from the total budget
The amount you need to demonstrate depends, among other things, on your destination, the date of your application and your family composition. The reference amounts below apply to 1 person and are expressed in Canadian dollars.
| Destination | Annual amount | Applications covered |
|---|---|---|
| Outside Quebec | CAD 23,448 for first-year living expenses | From September 1, 2026 |
| Quebec | CAD 24,617 for basic needs | From January 1, 2026 |
These amounts do not represent the total cost of studying: tuition and transportation costs, among others, must also be included. The amounts differ when other family members are included.
IRCC requires you to show that funds are available without relying on employment in Canada. For a program lasting more than 1 year, you must also explain how you will pay for the rest of your studies. A student loan, a Guaranteed Investment Certificate and 6 months of bank statements are among the examples of supporting documents; you do not automatically need to provide every example listed.
If someone is funding your studies, the New Delhi instructions request, among other things, a letter specifying the support offered, their relationship to you and their occupation. The documents must help explain the funds and their source. In your budget, distinguish a scholarship you are considering from funding that has actually been awarded.
Biometrics and timelines: build in a buffer
When biometrics are required, IRCC sends an instruction letter. It generally gives you 30 days to provide your fingerprints and photo. Booking an appointment is free; it is separate from the biometrics fee. Follow the instructions in your letter, especially if you cannot meet the deadline.
At the time of consultation, the displayed federal fees were CAD 150 per study permit and CAD 85 for individual biometrics. Exemptions may apply, and other expenses, such as translation or travel, are not included.
The New Delhi instructions recommend submitting your application at least 3 months before your planned travel date. This is a planning reference, not a promised processing time. Consult IRCC’s tool for the estimate that applies to your application: it may change and does not guarantee a decision before the start of classes.
Allow time for admission, any Quebec-specific procedures and biometrics collection.
Scholarships: 2 options to explore
The Indian Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment’s National Overseas Scholarship is intended for certain low-income social groups pursuing master’s or doctoral studies abroad. The guidelines applicable from 2026-2027 set out additional criteria and return obligations: they specify, among other things, that recipients must return to India within 30 days after completing their program and then stay for at least 1 year. This funding is not open to all Indian citizens and does not apply to bachelor’s degrees.
For undergraduate studies, UBC’s International Scholars awards are another option. They are not restricted to students from India. Selection takes academic performance and financial need into account, among other factors; a nomination and reference must be prepared.
Scholarship timelines and criteria may differ from those for a regular application. For each option, check the requirements and deadlines for the relevant intake before organizing your application.
Universities and programs
Three StudyCanada profiles can help you continue comparing options based on the examples in this guide:
- McGill University, in Montreal and Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, to explore an option whose official pages detail how Indian school certificates are assessed.
- Université Laval, in Quebec City, to consider a French-language study plan and the academic and language requirements published by the institution.
- The University of British Columbia, in Vancouver and Kelowna, to explore the institution’s options and an international funding opportunity.
These profiles are starting points, not proof of a program’s current requirements. To compare your choices, check the accepted credentials, prerequisite subjects, language, deadlines and funding on each program’s official pages. Then handle the required authorizations separately: an application for admission, a scholarship application or a study permit application does not guarantee a favourable decision.
