Secondary School Requirements

 

This listing provides a general outline of basic requirements for students interested in applying to a secondary school in Canada. There are numerous private, independent and publicly funded secondary schools available. Students can choose to study intensive English or an integrated academic and English program. For those with strong English language skills there are various academic programs, which can lead to a secondary school diploma. Some secondary schools also offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. IB is recognized throughout North America as equivalent to first-year university standing. Students who achieve well in IB subjects will generally receive university credit for their efforts.

Please note that specific requirements for institutions will vary and students are encouraged to check directly with the institution(s) they are interested in for specific admissions requirements.

 

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Students between 13 and 19 years of age. Some schools will accept younger children
  • Completion on the school application form and submission of an application fee
  • Official academic transcripts for the past three years
  • Letter(s) of recommendation, references
  • Students who have achieved average or better marks in their home schools
  • Students may be required to take placement tests for Math and/or English (and French where applicable)
  • Interviews, where possible, may also be required

Some secondary schools require a TOEFL test. Some independent secondary schools require students to submit Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) scores. Some schools require proof of custodian or guardianship for students under the age of 16.
