儀礼（宗教的・世俗的）の異文化比較研究、その様々な社会過程における役割および他の活動との関係。儀礼の変異性と、儀礼が何をするかを説明するために展開された理論（知的主義、機能主義、パフォーマティブ等）の範囲を探る。
