学生は独創的研究を行う可能性を評価する予備論文（Qualifying Paper, QP）を作成する必要がある。QPには言語理論と言語記録および/または再活性化の両面が含まれていなければならないが、それぞれに割かれる比率は学生ごとに異なる。
