Simulation to service: Marine Institute trains CFB Halifax harbour masters on next‑generation tugs
The Marine Institute’s Centre for Marine Simulation (Memorial University) developed a simulation program to prepare CFB Halifax’s harbour master team for azimuth‑propelled tugs; the first tug, Canso, entered service in January 2026.
Following a late‑2025 competitive call, the Centre was selected to build a realistic Halifax harbour scenario and run a two‑phase course: intensive bridge‑simulator training followed by live operations with Atlantic Towing mentors. The new tugs use powerful azimuth propulsion and require different handling; the program trained just under 20 candidates who gained practical skills and confidence. Capt. Chris Hearn emphasized the safety value of letting crews learn from mistakes in simulators. Shortly after the final session, one trained crew completed its inaugural ship‑assist with Canso.
