University of Calgary launches Electricity Centre to connect interdisciplinary energy research
In October 2026 the University of Calgary opened an Electricity Centre to bring together engineers, lawyers, social scientists and others to tackle technological, economic and environmental electricity challenges. The Centre promotes cross‑disciplinary projects, showcased research on printed electronics and organic solar cells, and will host an Oct 17 workshop on AI and data‑centre impacts on Alberta’s grid.
The University of Calgary launched an Electricity Centre in October 2026 to break down disciplinary silos and address reliability, affordability and policy issues in the evolving electricity system. Co‑directors such as Sara Hastings‑Simon and Blake Shaffer plan to connect engineering, law and social‑science research with industry needs. At an inaugural session, Prof. Greg Welch presented work on printed electronics and organic photovoltaic technologies, while others discussed equity in EV charging infrastructure. The Centre also aims to engage the public: a public workshop (in English) on the effects of AI and growing data‑centre demand on Alberta’s grid is set for 17 October 2026.
