Brock awarded $100,000 to test an antibody that may restore brain vessel health in Alzheimer’s disease
Brock University researchers received $100,000 from the Alzheimer Society and Brain Canada to test an antibody designed to remove damaged vascular proteins and help clear beta‑amyloid in preclinical models.
Newman Sze (Canada Research Chair in Mechanisms of Health and Disease) leads a Brock team funded with $100,000 for the project “Restoring Cerebrovascular Health in Alzheimer’s Disease by Targeting Molecular Damage in the Neurovascular Unit.” The researchers will evaluate the isoDGR‑mAb antibody in animal models to remove age‑linked protein damage from brain blood vessels, protect the blood–brain barrier and restore vascular clearance of beta‑amyloid. Team members include Brock PhD students Ranjith Iyappan, Yazhini Thinakaran and Shakiru Alaka, with collaborators from Newcastle University and the National University of Singapore. Funding is provided by the Alzheimer Society and Brain Canada via the Canada Brain Research Fund.
