Memorial launches CLIMAC interactive map tracking climate-induced migration in Atlantic Canada

Source publication : 2026-10-21 · Radio-Canada — Nouveau-Brunswick

Memorial University released CLIMAC, an interactive map summarizing 25 years of climate-driven displacement in Atlantic Canada: 290 events, 20 deaths, 72,700 evacuations, 790 permanent relocations and ≈33,500 damaged structures.

A research team at Memorial University — including three master’s students and professor Isabelle Côté — launched CLIMAC, an interactive map built from public datasets (notably the Canadian Disaster Database) and media reports. Over the past 25 years the tool records 290 severe climate events responsible for 20 deaths, the evacuation of 72,700 people, 790 permanent relocations and about 33,500 damaged structures; more than half of evacuations occurred in the last three years, largely due to wildfires. Funded by the Ocean Frontier Institute’s Transformer l’action pour le climat program, CLIMAC will be translated into French and may expand to eastern Quebec.
