McGill launches participatory process to increase representation in campus place‑naming

Source publication : 2026-11-02 · McGill University

McGill’s Office of the Provost has opened an inclusive honorific naming process, with a new web nomination form to simplify proposals. The initiative supports the university’s reconciliation and anti‑racism plans. An information session is scheduled for Nov. 23, 2026 at 2 p.m. The measure aims to surface people and stories from diverse communities for recognition in campus spaces.

McGill introduced a streamlined, public nomination pathway enabling community members to suggest individuals for honorific naming of campus spaces. An Advisory Committee for Honorific Naming will use the new web form to collect core details and conduct initial evaluations of nominees. The effort complements existing commitments — including reconciliation and Anti‑Black Racism actions — and follows prior projects such as the naming of the Tsi Non:we Onkwatonhnhets intersection. An information session for the community is set for Nov. 23, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.
