McMaster trainee on track to become Canada’s first woman dual‑practice trauma and vascular surgeon
Emily Hodgson, a vascular surgery trainee at McMaster, has begun attending trauma team leader shifts and was selected by the Canadian Armed Forces as a full‑time general surgeon with a vascular subspecialty. She will complete training in 2028 and become the first woman in Canada to hold both trauma and vascular surgical roles.
Having completed five years of general surgery residency and three years of postgraduate research at McMaster, Emily Hodgson is now in vascular surgery training and is serving as an attending trauma team leader at Hamilton General Hospital. Selected for a full‑time military surgical role, she is set to graduate in 2028 as Canada’s third military vascular surgeon and the first woman to practice both trauma and vascular surgery.
