Named laureate of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, Anne Carson is recognized for an inventive body of work that engages classical traditions. Trained at the University of Toronto, she joined McGill’s Classics department in 1988 and was appointed John MacNaughton Professor of Classics in 2000 before leaving for the University of Michigan in 2002. A poet, essayist, translator and classicist, Carson’s honors include the Lannan Literary Award, two Griffin Poetry Prizes, the T. S. Eliot Prize, the Princess of Asturias Award and the PEN/Nabokov Award; she has also held Guggenheim and MacArthur fellowships and was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2005.
