First 75‑m tower crane signals start of construction at McGill Sustainability Park
A 75‑metre tower crane indicates McGill’s Sustainability Park has moved into construction. The project expects three cranes, has diverted 90% of demolition waste for reuse, and will include 173 geothermal wells 250 m deep, alongside heritage restoration.
McGill has installed a 75‑m tower crane—the largest of three planned—whose 66‑m working arm can lift up to 20,000 kg; the other two cranes are due by month’s end. Preparatory work began with decontamination in January 2022 and demolition from January to September 2023. The development emphasizes material reuse (90% of demolition material diverted from landfill) and heritage preservation of 130‑year‑old pavilions. The site will also feature 173 geothermal wells, each 250 m deep, to supply much of the building’s winter heating capacity.
