Waterloo unveils a permanent Moccasin Identifier Treaty Marker to make treaty awareness visible on campus

Source publication : 2026-10-07 · University of Waterloo

The Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo has established a permanent Moccasin Identifier Treaty Marker in October 2026, co‑created with the Moccasin Identifier team and the University’s Creative Studio. Located by Environment 3, it features a QR code linking to educational treaty resources.

The installation, developed in collaboration with Moccasin Identifier (founded by Carolyn King) and Waterloo’s Creative Studio, occupies the green space opposite Environment 3. Made with weather‑resistant steel and incorporating a QR code, the marker connects visitors to materials on Indigenous treaties, histories and presence on the land. Described as among the first such campus installations in Canada, it aims to transform territorial acknowledgement into a visible, everyday prompt for learning and reflection and to support ongoing treaty education across the university.
