McGill unveils five‑year plan to expand recreational access and strengthen varsity programs
McGill’s Athletics & Recreation Task Force released a five‑year strategic plan to make A&R a core part of student well‑being, campus life and academic activities. The plan emphasizes affordable, accessible recreation, stronger varsity visibility, academic integration, updated governance and community engagement. An external review led to recommendations to reinstate men’s and women’s track and field. The plan will be presented to Senate on Nov. 11, subject to Senate approval on Dec. 2, 2026, and, if approved, implemented in phases beginning spring 2027.
The Task Force’s recommendations cover five strategic themes: well‑being, varsity sport, academics, governance and community. Actions include expanding affordable recreational opportunities, integrating athletics into teaching and research, and creating a transparent framework for varsity decisions. Following an independent review of group 2–4 varsity teams, the report proposes reinstating men’s and women’s track and field and regular, evidence‑based team evaluations. The plan is slated for Senate presentation on Nov. 11, Senate approval on Dec. 2, 2026, and phased implementation starting spring 2027.
