Starting in 2027, Université Laval’s Faculty of Medicine will offer an optional 12‑month 'Transition to Practice' year for family medicine residents. The structured, customizable program helps consolidate residency skills while gradually moving toward independent practice. Residents select up to two practice profiles (primary care, emergency, hospital care, mental health, care of older adults, perinatal care, early childhood, chronic pain, palliative care, musculoskeletal medicine, teaching/leadership) — emergency may be chosen alone. The pathway includes a senior resident role in a GMF‑U, four optional targeted rotations, and the possibility to incorporate short advanced competency modules. The aim is to strengthen clinical competence, leadership, practice management and supervision skills.
