ULaval identifies urinary UDP‑sugar biomarkers that predict acute kidney injury after cardiac surgery
A Université Laval team led by Prof. Sylvie Breton identified urinary UDP‑sugars that predict acute kidney injury in 100 cardiac surgery patients (study 2021–2024). These biomarkers appear several hours before current diagnostics; findings published in American Journal of Physiology – Heart and Circulatory Physiology.
Led by Prof. Sylvie Breton (Dept. of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproduction; CHU de Québec–Université Laval research centre), the study analyzed 100 cardiac surgery patients between 2021 and 2024 in collaboration with Siamak Mohammadi (IUCPQ). Researchers detected urinary UDP‑sugars hours earlier than conventional diagnostic methods, potentially enabling earlier clinical intervention. Published in the American Journal of Physiology – Heart and Circulatory Physiology, the results also point toward new therapeutic strategies to lower the incidence and severity of acute kidney injury.
