Waterloo appoints inaugural Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs to boost research and training

Source publication : 2026-11-02 · Université de Waterloo — nouvelles

The University of Waterloo named three international researchers as inaugural Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs: Dr. Talia Bettcher (gender‑based violence prevention and trans community resilience), Dr. Ruibing Wang (supramolecular biomaterials) and Dr. James Wolffsohn (health innovation in eye care). Supported through the federal Canada Global Impact+ initiative, the chairs aim to expand research capacity, training and translation into practical therapies and public‑facing tools in Canada.

The appointments will fund long‑term programs on campus. Bettcher will lead community‑engaged work to develop prevention tools and supports for trans communities. Wang, joining Engineering in April 2027, will advance reversible biomaterials and cell‑based therapeutic platforms to improve accessibility and commercialization of advanced treatments. Wolffsohn will focus on equitable, technology‑enabled eye‑care solutions that move rapidly to clinical and remote settings. The hires are part of a broader federal effort to attract top international researchers and strengthen Canada’s research ecosystem.
