McGill students launch Project Bird Safe: decals installed to cut bird-window collisions by up to 95%
Two McGill undergraduates organized a student survey with nearly 50 volunteers, documenting 30 collisions (24 fatalities) across nine buildings. Backed by the Sustainability Projects Fund, their work led to bird‑safe decals on Leacock and Gardner residence—the first such effort at a Quebec university.
Turning a class assignment into campus action, Jessica Liddell and Ava Mckee ran a two‑month student monitoring campaign that found 30 bird collisions on nine McGill buildings. With funding from the Sustainability Projects Fund, decals were installed on the Leacock building and Gardner Hall residence; these treatments are expected to reduce collisions on those façades by up to 95%. The team plans continued monitoring and aims to expand installations across campus.
