Brock’s CO‑PLAY network partners nationally to boost newcomer youth participation in sport
CO‑PLAY, led by Brock and backed by a $2.5 million SSHRC Partnership Grant, links over 110 community organizations and researchers to increase newcomer children’s access to sport and recreation. A 'Try It' event in Hamilton engaged nearly 100 newcomer girls and their families in locally offered activities.
CO‑PLAY brings researchers and community partners together to co‑design and evaluate local initiatives that lower barriers to sport for newcomer youth. Project Director Matthew Kwan (Canada Research Chair in Youth Mental Health and Performance) leads the network, which operates regional hubs in Victoria, Calgary, Sherbrooke, Halifax and Hamilton. Supported by a $2.5 million SSHRC Partnership Grant, the network includes more than 110 organizations. PhD candidate Taylor Rowe chairs a Youth Advisory Council; events like Try It offer hands‑on, welcoming activities delivered with municipal and community partners to foster belonging and lifelong physical activity.
