McMaster wins $1.02M NSERC Alliance grant to study 'mobility of care' and improve transit access
McMaster is leading a national project funded by a three‑year NSERC Alliance grant ($1,020,000) to better measure 'mobility of care' and inform transit planning. The team partners with 14 transit agencies and researchers at the University of Alberta and Polytechnique Montréal to collect richer rider data.
Transportation geographer Léa Ravensbergen (joined McMaster in 2023) leads a project awarded a three‑year $1,020,000 NSERC Alliance grant. Collaborating with Emily Grisé (UAlberta), Geneviève Boisjoly and Martin Trépanier (Polytechnique Montréal), the team is working with 14 Canadian transit agencies to gather more complete data on who uses transit, when and for what purposes—highlighting 'mobility of care' trips (about 30% of daily trips according to prior work). The initiative also examines paratransit operations, including a joint study with the City of Hamilton and DARTS.
