MSVU researchers win $1.8M in NSERC grants for interdisciplinary research and student training

MSVU secured $1.8M in NSERC Discovery Horizons, Discovery and Discovery Launch funding over five years for projects including a $499,344 study on iodine–thiamine co‑fortified salt, mathematical network research, ocular skeletal development, phosphorus ligand chemistry, and electrochemical water sensors. Earlier in 2026 the Two‑Eyed Seeing program received $337,800 in NSERC PromoScience funding for a fourth three‑year term.

Mount Saint Vincent University researchers received $1.8 million in NSERC Discovery Horizons, Discovery and Discovery Launch grants over five years. Funded projects span applied human nutrition, mathematics, developmental biology, chemistry and environmental sensing. Highlights include Dr. Kyly Whitfield’s $499,344 project on iodine–thiamine co‑fortified salt (in partnership with Cambodian and Canadian institutions), and sensor development for emerging contaminants ($187,500). The awards emphasize interdisciplinary research, industry and community collaboration, and training opportunities for MSVU students across lab and field work and internships.
