Memorial signs five-year MOU with Finnish partner to boost Arctic training, research and ship design
On Sept. 7, 2026, Memorial University’s Marine Institute and Finland’s Satakunta University of Applied Sciences signed a five-year framework. The collaboration targets applied R&D in ice-class ship design, workforce development, student and faculty mobility, and shared simulation and research infrastructure to strengthen Arctic capabilities.
The memorandum combines complementary strengths: Memorial’s expertise in marine simulation, ice navigation, ship design, offshore safety and industry-driven training, and Satakunta’s capacity in maritime logistics, safety and digital maritime technologies. Framed within the Icebreaker Collaboration Effort and following a Canada–Finland maritime MOU in April 2026, the agreement foresees specific arrangements for joint and articulated programs, mobility, shared simulation assets, collaborative applied research proposals and industry-facing upskilling to prepare talent for northern marine operations.
