UQAM overhauls MA and PhD in History: stronger supervision, professional skills and dual-degree options

Source publication : 2026-11-02 · Université du Québec à Montréal

Since fall 2026 UQAM has revamped its MA and PhD in History. The MA adds a second-year course to guide thesis writing and highlight professional skills; it now offers four tracks, including Digital Humanities and two dual-degree tracks with the University of Tours. The PhD pathway is simplified (4–5 year horizon), with a shorter doctoral seminar and an earlier thesis proposal deadline at the end of year one.

The overhaul aims to streamline progression and strengthen supervision for graduate students. The MA’s new course dedicates sessions to thesis writing and to meetings with professionals to showcase non‑academic career paths. MA tracks can be taken full‑ or part‑time in Montreal; dual degrees with the University of Tours require full‑time study. The PhD now prioritizes early research by requiring a thesis proposal by the end of year one, reducing seminar length and refocusing the doctoral exam on students’ research themes.
