UBC to test full-scale concrete wall in November 2026 to study seismic vulnerability of older residential buildings

Source publication : 2026-10-15 · UBC Okanagan

UBC Okanagan and UBC Vancouver will test a lightly reinforced concrete wall in Nov 2026 to improve seismic models for older buildings.

Researchers from UBC Okanagan and UBC Vancouver will conduct a large-scale experiment in November 2026, subjecting a lightly reinforced concrete wall—representative of older construction—to simulated earthquake demands. The test will use state-of-the-art structural testing equipment procured by UBC Okanagan and installed at the Vancouver campus. Observations of cracking, deformation and loss of strength will refine computer models used to assess existing mid- and high-rise concrete residential buildings, helping prioritize assessments and potential strengthening. The team includes Dr. Lisa Tobber (UBC Okanagan) and Dr. Perry Adebar (UBC Vancouver).
