Two Memorial students honoured nationally by CBIE for leadership supporting international and refugee students

On 7 October 2026, the Canadian Bureau for International Education recognized Quazi Mohammad Abrar Nafis and Yar Ayuen Malual of Memorial University for their contributions to campus internationalization and newcomer support.

Memorial University students Quazi Mohammad Abrar Nafis and Yar Ayuen Malual received national awards from the Canadian Bureau for International Education on 7 October 2026. Quazi, an international student from Bangladesh and president of the International Students Resource Centre, was awarded the Elizabeth Paterson Award for initiatives such as ISC ASPIRE and ISC RISE, provincial advocacy and more than 2,500 volunteer hours. Yar, pursuing a joint BSc and BA, earned the New World Award for leadership in refugee student support through the Student Refugee Program and as chair of the local WUSC committee. Both recognitions highlight student-led efforts to foster inclusion on campus.
