What kind of study plan do you want to fund?

Start by distinguishing a temporary stay connected to your current studies from enrolment in a Canadian degree. Your level of study, nationality, field and application cycle may also determine whether funding is right for your situation.

Country and programme reviewed Project covered First question to ask
France — International Mobility Aid Exchange or internship integrated into an eligible programme Does my French institution recognize this stay as part of my programme?
Tunisia — 2026-2027 national offer Master’s and doctoral studies abroad, with Canada annexes mentioned Where can I obtain the full call and the annex for my level?
Mexico — 2026 Secihti call In-person master’s or doctoral studies abroad in the specified fields Do my programme and profile meet the call’s requirements?
Indonesia — LPDP STEM Industri Strategis 2026 Master’s or doctoral studies for Indonesian nationals, subject to the stream’s conditions Do my studies and post-study plans meet the requirements?
Chile — Ministry of Science programme In 2026, new calls for master’s scholarships abroad under the programme in question were suspended Is there an official call for my level and year?

This table is a guide, not a ranking or a list of competitions currently open. It is selective: the absence of a country does not mean no funding is available there. For each option, look for the application cycle that applies to your intended start date rather than assuming that previous conditions will continue.

France: AMI for mobility connected to your programme

The International Mobility Aid, or AMI, may support an exchange or internship abroad. It applies in particular to recipients of a needs-based scholarship or an annual special allowance who are pursuing a national diploma or an institutional diploma conferring a university degree and falling under the ministry responsible for higher education.

For 2026-2027, the aid is €400 per month. The stay must last from 1 to 10 consecutive months, and the total cannot exceed 10 monthly payments over the course of higher education. The institution decides how many monthly payments to award: an eligible mobility period is therefore not necessarily funded for its entire duration.

If you are considering an exchange in Canada from France, ask your institution’s international relations office about internal deadlines and recognition of the stay. However, do not treat AMI as a general scholarship for independent enrolment in a Canadian degree.

Tunisia: find the offer and the Canada annexes

The indexed official announcement of Tunisia’s 2026-2027 offer concerns master’s and doctoral scholarships abroad and mentions two Canada annexes.

However, the full announcement and the master’s annex were not accessible during verification: opening them directly returned a 403 error. The indexed excerpt does not make it possible to confirm the amounts, criteria, recommended programmes or deadline here.

To proceed, ask the appropriate Tunisian administration for the circular and the annex for your level and year. Also check the application process: the mention of Canada does not prove that a particular programme is eligible or that a scholarship will be awarded.

Mexico: compare the Secihti allowance with covered costs

The 2026 Secihti call was for Mexican nationals admitted to or enrolled in in-person master’s or doctoral studies abroad in the specified priority fields. For a study plan in Canada, the destination alone is therefore not enough: you need to review the programme and the call’s other conditions.

For Tipo 1, the “rest of the world” rate— the geographic category that includes Canada, which has no separate Canadian line—listed:

Item Amount provided for in the 2026 call
Monthly allowance, with no dependants 1,250 USD
Master’s tuition fees Maximum of 4,000 USD per year
Doctoral tuition fees Maximum of 10,000 USD per year

The amounts are in US dollars, not Canadian dollars. Tuition fee limits do not guarantee payment of the full university bill: compare them with your programme’s fees and plan for the balance.

Applications for this cycle were scheduled to be accepted from March 23 to May 22, 2026; the notice dated July 28 retained these dates. For a later start date, look for a new call and its schedule rather than assuming the 2026 cycle is still accepting applications.

Indonesia: check the programme and return commitment

The LPDP STEM Industri Strategis 2026 stream is for Indonesian nationals and covers master’s and doctoral studies. It provides full or partial funding depending on the applicant’s profile; partial funding is not available to every category. Compare the expenses covered by the option that applies to you rather than relying only on the phrase “LPDP scholarship.”

A foreign programme that is not on the LPDP list may be proposed subject to conditions. These include an unconditional letter of admission and evidence of the quality or reputation of the programme and institution. This option does not guarantee acceptance of a particular Canadian programme.

The application also requires a commitment to return and a plan to contribute in Indonesia. The application period shown for the second 2026 selection ran from June 30 to July 31. For another cycle, check the directory, conditions and dates again.

Chile: distinguish between master’s and doctoral studies

On March 25, 2026, Chile’s Ministry of Science announced that new calls for master’s scholarships abroad under its training programme would be suspended during 2026. It specified that current scholarships and doctoral programmes were not affected by this measure. This announcement does not necessarily describe the decisions of other Chilean public funders.

An older ministry announcement is therefore not enough to establish funding for a new master’s degree in Canada. Look for the official call that applies to your level and intended year. The March announcement alone does not allow anyone to promise that applications will reopen in 2027.

Universities and programmes: coordinate funding in Canada

Eligibility for a national scholarship and the way a university handles funding are two separate matters to check. The following examples concern financial arrangements: they do not identify any programme as eligible for a government scholarship.

At McGill University, a sponsor’s letter is required to arrange billing to a third-party organization. The student remains responsible for fees not covered and, ultimately, for amounts the university is unable to recover from the sponsor. Ask the financial services office whether your sponsorship can use this arrangement and when payments will be made.

At Université Laval, the institutional doctoral exemption excludes, among others, people who are already exempt under an agreement and those whose scholarship pays the additional tuition fees. This is a rule specific to this exemption, not a general prohibition on combining all forms of aid. Have your funding combination reviewed before adding up the amounts announced.

More broadly, in Quebec, exemptions or preferential rates under international agreements reduce tuition fees. They are not living allowances paid by a student’s home country. Conditions vary according to country of origin and level of study; a recommendation from the partner country may be required for certain categories.

Budget and permits: turn an option into a viable plan

For each funding option you are considering, keep a record of the eligible profile, exact programme, schedule, covered expenses, limits, currency and post-study commitments. Then distinguish between:

  • amounts paid to you for your expenses;
  • payments made directly to the institution;
  • tuition fee reductions;
  • expenses for which funding has not been confirmed.

Ask the funder and the university about rules for combining funding and payment dates. Submitting an application or seeing a maximum amount announced does not mean that the money has been confirmed for your application.

If you need a study permit, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada requires you to demonstrate that you have the resources needed for your studies, living expenses and transportation without relying on work in Canada. A scholarship that covers only tuition therefore may not satisfy the full financial proof requirement. It also does not replace any other applicable documents.

This is general information, not individual immigration advice: the documents and amounts depend on your situation and the date of your application. For a study plan in Quebec, also check the applicable provincial requirements. Admission or a scholarship does not guarantee that a permit will be issued.
