Environmental Studies
Environmental Studies at Grenfell Environmental problems such as global climate change, acid rain, decreasing biodiversity, deforestation, and overpopulation are increasingly affecting the well-being of humanity and threatening the viability of many of the earths eco-systems. The aim of the Environmental Studies programme is to encourage students to critically examine and develop a broad yet integrated understanding of environmental issues, problems, and possible solutions. To achieve this, the programme has a substantial common core of courses that will provide students with a broad background in Environmental Studies. As well, students will choose from one of two areas of concentration, Environmental Perspectives, or Outdoor Environmental Pursuits. The Environmental Perspectives concentration will provide students with the means to develop a deeper and more comprehensive theoretical understanding of the environmental problems. The Outdoor Environmental Pursuits concentration will provide students with practical experiences and outdoor skills that respect fragile wilderness environments; and at the same time, broaden the breadth and focus of students\' understanding of their natural environment.
Environmental Science
Environmental Science at Grenfell The environmental science programme is interdisciplinary, combining aspects of all of the natural sciences, specifically as they contribute to a greater awareness and understanding of the environment. The programme provides a broad education and includes courses designed to enhance your appreciation of the scientific, social, cultural and political issues that impinge on the environment. It also provides focused in-depth knowledge in a single discipline as it relates to the environment. With its two streams-- chemistry and biology --and potential for the addition of other streams, this degree will be attractive to students who are seeking higher education in a focused environmental science programme and who value a special locale that offers a friendly atmosphere and high quality instruction.
Faculty of Business Administration
As the only university in the province, Memorial is focused on developing high quality programs to ensure students develop the skills necessary to compete. Our innovative programs and award-winning faculty and students are recognized nationally and internationally. In 2002 we became the fist business faculty in Atlantic Canada, and one of only eight in the country, to earn AACSB International accreditation. This is the highest distinction a business school anywhere in the world can receive. The success of our programs, combined with our students’ outstanding performance in competitions, has solidified our position as one of the very best. Diploma in English as a Second Language (ESL)
The diploma in English as a Second Language (ESL) is offered to students enrolled in the arts program and to students bachelor of who have completed a bachelor of arts (honours or general) at this or another university. This program prepares students for positions in private language schools and community colleges in Canada and overseas, working primarily with adults whose first language is not English. The diploma combines expertise from the Department of English Language and Literature, the Department of Linguistics and the Faculty of Education. The required courses provide a solid understanding of the characteristics and needs of adult ESL learners. Individuals who have been awarded the ESL Diploma are more marketable internationally and thus may receive better pay and be given more challenging positions. The program will also be an advantage to students wishing to study Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) or applied language studies at the graduate level. As part of this program students have the opportunity to participate in a TESL practicurn (Instructional Field Placement) in which they observe and teach in ESL classrooms under the supervision of a master instructor. This practical experience can be invaluable in the job market. Admission is limited and competitive. A high level of English language proficiency is required. Normally, 15 students are admitted to the program each year. Students are advised to notify the program coordinator of their intention to apply for this diploma. Formal application is normally made in the second semester of the student\'s second year through the Registrar\'s Office.
