What is Communication?
대학에서 커뮤니케이션 학과는 정보, 그리고 어떻게 정보가 만들어지고, 공유되고, 알려지고, 받아들여지고, 사용되는지 등에 대해 학문적으로 다루는 과정이다. 이 학과에서는 다양한 커뮤니케이션 미디아와 더불어 문화에 대한 학업과정도 함께 포함하고 있다.

사이먼 프레이저 대학의 커뮤니케이션 학부에서는 다양한 커뮤니케이션 이론에 대한 교육뿐만 아니라 빠르게 변화하고 있는 글로발 사회 안의 미디아, 기술, 문화에 대한 실용적인 관점을 학생들에게 제시하고 있다. 이 학부에서는 혁신적인 교육과정, 최신식 연구시설, 그리고 지식과 현장에서의 실용성을 지속적으로 접목하고자 최선을 다하고 있다.

SFU의 커뮤니케이션 대학은 교수진, 대학원생, 학부생들을 한데 모으는 발전된 연구소들과 센터들이 있고, 다양한 프로젝트가 이루어지고 있는 현장이자 중심지이다. 이들은 기술적인 것부터 문화정책, 수준 높은 정보시스템, 출판, 위험관리 커뮤니케이션, 미디아 분석, 정치적 경제, 국제 개발 등 매우 다양한 분야를 다루고 있다. 그러나 각 분야는 지식을 축적하는 근간이 되고 있으며, 이 대학과 그 구성원은 캐나다 사회에 이바지하고 있으며, 또한 캐나다는 세계의 일원으로 공원하고 있는 것이다.

My Experiences at Simon Fraser University
– School of Communication
I graduated in 2002 with a BA in Communication and a minor in Sociology. My main study focus was in social issues communication and publishing.

First and second year class sizes tend to be large with anywhere from 75-150 students. Tutorials are smaller with 10-30 students. Third and fourth year course tend to get smaller as people start to focus on their specialties. There are more discussion group lectures at these levels as well. Another point to note is that the School of Communication conducts classes at the main campus (Burnaby Mountain) and downtown Vancouver (Harbour Centre).

Part of the reason why I wanted to go to SFU was because of its amazing Co-operative Education Program. If you are interested in combining your studies with work experience, then Co-op Programs are the way to do it. I was able to experiment with different jobs in my field, work with government and private companies, and strengthen my resume with relevant work experience.
