Howe Sound School District Welcome to International Students The International Student Program offered by the School District 48, allows students from around the world to study and learn alongside Canadian students of the same age. The program encourages cultural awareness and international understanding by bringing students together and enabling them to experience similar social and academic challenges. The Howe Sound School District is located in British Columbia's spectacular Sea to Sky corridor where nature has provided tremendous recreational opportunities. The parks, forests, mountains and beaches are free for you to enjoy. The District contains three major population centres: :: Squamish Squamish is a growing and safe community of 16,000 people, located just 67 kms north of Vancouver. Squamish has 6 elementary schools and 2 secondary schools. :: Whistler Whistler is a world famous all-season resort municipality, renowned for quality skiing on the twin mountains of Whistler and Blackcomb. Whistler has 2 elementary and 1 secondary school and is only a 40-minute drive from Squamish. :: Pemberton Pemberton is a rural community supported by forestry and agriculture. Pemberton has 1 elementary school and 1 secondary school. The District Outdoor Education centre is located in the Pemberton Valley on 237 acres surrounded by huge snow-capped peaks. English as a Second Language (ESL) Program
The students receive orientation to the school facilities and expectations, as well as community information, orientation and academic support. The classes provide information about Canadian culture and laws.
Placement testing with the Composite Placement Test that is based on the ESL standards of the British Columbia Ministry of Education.
Non-credit ESL support.
Quickly integrate into participation-based courses.
Academic course enrolment is dependent on placement score and grades or previous TOEFL scores from home country school.
Cannot accommodate international students with learning disabilities.

Career Program
Courses that specifically help prepare students for related college, university, technical training or entry-level employment.
Grades 11 and 12
Work Experience where students work with a community employer-sponsor to learn about a career field of their choice.
Peer Tutoring Program
Senior students provide classroom assistance to the international students during ESL classes. In addition to providing academic support, this helps to encourage international student’s integration into the general school population.
English lesson\'s are taught in local schools and are based on the Canadian School system.
Low student to teacher ratio of 15:1 to insure individual attention for student.
Homestay with English speaking families.
Receive a Canadian certificate of achievement form the Howe Sound School District.
Program Includes:
Homestay arranged in Squamish, Whistler or Pembeton. Which includes 3 meals a day.
English language instruction.
Pick up and drop off at the Vancouver International Airport.
Welcome/orientation session.

Obtain Grade 11 or 12 second language course credit without participating in the course.
The Challenge Program enables students:
To have course work previously completed elsewhere evaluated for credit,
To write an exam in a subject in order to receive credit without having to take the course work.
