Founded in 1991, ILSC is a private Canadian language school with classes that are interactive and student-centred. Our modern and spacious facilities include computer labs with free Internet access, common areas and resource centres. Our instructors are experienced and our staff, Cultural Counsellors and Homestay Department are helpful and resourceful. Expect our Homestay families to welcome you into their home. We also offer a wealth of organized after-school activities and weekend Excursions. Programs include English Communication, Academic Preparation, Business, Test Preparation (TOEFL, etc.), English through the Arts, Liberal Arts, Computer Education, Cooperative Education, Executive Business English, English-in-Action, Tutoring, Activities and Homestay. Communication
Improve your speaking and listening skills through dynamic group activities. Communicate in different social situations. The course also includes elements of reading and writing and is offered at eight language levels in English
Test Preparation
TOEFL Preparation (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Prepare for success in the standard entrance exam into North American colleges and universities.   TOEIC Preparation (Test of English for International Communication) Companies use this test to measure your ability to understand English business-related conversation and literature.   ILSC offers the official TOEIC test monthly. Cambridge Preparation FCE (First Certificate in English) Students who acheive the First Certificate in English have demonstrated Intermediate proficiency in all language skills: speaking, reading, writing, listening, and English in use ( grammar knowledge) . The FCE is widely recognized in commerce and industry as well as by many European universities and career colleges. Cambridge Preparation CAE ( Certificate in Advanced English) This is the advanced level Cambridge examination. like the FCE, it requires kinowledge of all language skills and is widely recognized in commerce and industry, European universities and career colleges.
Business English Diploma Program
The Business English Diploma Program will expose students to a wide range of courses intended to expand both their Business and their English expertise. Courses are designed to complement one another. By actively using English in mock business settings, students will acquire a secure, confident and broad-based understanding of both Business and Business English Course descriptions : course is available at the Intermediate level : course is available at the Advanced level Business English 3 60 hours Acquire business English vocabulary, grammar and social etiquette for business situations Work Place Preparation 60 hours Get the knowledge, language skills and motivation for success in the workplace! International Business 1 60 hours Further your knowledge of business and management. English language development through marketing, advertising, salesmanship, business law, finance, management, international trade and computers. International Business 2 60 hours (Pre-requisite IB-1 or a solid background in business) Expanding on IB-1 with a focus on advertising, presenting, entrepreneurship, marketing, leadership, law, money and banking, etiquette, international trade, negotiations, stock market and ethics in an international context. Advertising and Design 60 hours (In the computer lab) Study marketing and advertising with an emphasis on the basics of Photoshop Design and effective advertising and promotion E-Business and Web Design 60 hours (In the computer lab) Business on the web Creating a professional Web page Marketing 60 hours A contemporary view of the ever evolving, exciting world of marketing. This course focuses on fundamental theories, concepts and hands on practical examples and applications. Small Business Development Class 60 hours Business planning and mock implementation - A step-by-step process - Management skills Business in BC: Models that work Business Culture 30 hours Improve cross-cultural awareness, study world business etiquette, and learn how to employ humour in the workplace Presentation Skills 30 hours Learn effective communication, build confidence, listening and speaking abilities, speech organization, delivery and increase your sense of ease when speaking in front of an audience. Power Point Presentation 30 hours (In the computer lab) Taking public speaking into the professional realm using the latest technology Business Writing 30 hours Basics of Academic Writing Focus on improving written office communications, resumes, business proposals and writing for the web. Listening for Professionals 30 hours Focus on improving listening skills for business and for test preparation classes Telephone listening and communication.
English in Action
These programs run from June 16 - September 6, 2003 inclusive. Suggested minimum 1 week & maximum 3 weeks for \'In-Action\' programs.   Get out of the classroom and into action! These programs combine classroom study in the mornings with activities in the afternoons. (3 afternoon activities per week.) Live the language while participating in a variety of social, cultural and recreational activities. Visit local museums and tourist attractions, cycle, ski, go horseback riding and kayaking, dine in restaurants, see movies, rock climb, ice skate, go hiking, rollerblading and much more… All levels
Liberal Arts
Canadian Studies Join this class to discover Canada through its history, geography, art, politics, and economic and legal systems. Explore current issues such as immigration trends, French-English relations, Aboriginal relations, literature, rural life, and more. High Intermediate to Advanced International Current Events Explore how international events unfold and affect politics, society, law and the economy. Various media are used including television, video and Internet. High Intermediate to Advanced Global Social Issues Explore social issues that concern cultures around the world. Possible topics include women\'s and children\'s rights, health care, the role of religion and the environment. High Intermediate to Advanced Journalism Create a professional newsletter for the ILSC community! Integrate and refine your writing, vocabulary, grammar and design skills in a dynamic print format. Explore the city, investigate an issue that is important to you and build solid interview skills. Middle Intermediate to Advanced Discussion Circle for the Real World Discuss such topics as art, sports, psychology, food, science and technology as you improve your formal and informal vocabulary, listening, conversational and grammar skills. High Advanced English through History From the Ancient to the Modern World, explore the why, when and how of history and the parallels to the present day. Use various media to explore the mistakes, crimes, beliefs, achievements and insanities of humankind. High Intermediate to Advanced Media Studies Interested in media and its impact on society? Explore both the structure and context of newspapers, magazines, television, radio and the Internet in a society where the medium is sometimes the message.
