The Department of Extension and Community Affairs works in harmony with UCCB\'s four academic schools to design and deliver community-based programming. The focus of this academic activity is designed to meet the present and anticipated educational, cultural, economic, societal, and political needs of the communities we serve. ECA has developed partnerships with the public school system, business community, First Nations communities, science and technology interests, and is expanding its professional development programs to other constituencies. The University College, in concert with Cape Breton school Boards, provides specialized professional development opportunities for teachers and school administrators in both credit and non-credit programming, integrating the teacher education program with the University College\'s academic schools. At present, course offerings include the Canadian Institute of Management (CIM), Institute of Canadian Bankers (ICB), Occupational Health and Safety, Mi\'kmaq Access Programming, Distance Education, Literary Enhancement, Certified Network Engineer, and VentureFEST, a summer science and entrepreneurship program for teenagers. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it serves to illustrate ECA\'s commitment to the community. These programs are developed through extensive consultation with the appropriate professional or community associations. The UCCB Playhouse and Art Gallery continue to play a key role in the growth of the artistic and cultural communities in Cape Breton. The community is invited to make use of these national-standard facilities through the Annual Festival of Plays, Exhibits, Film Series, and UCCB\'s permanent art collection. In addition, interested individuals can develop their artistic interests through innovative courses that are integrated within the activities of the Playhouse and Art Gallery. The University College is broadening access to its programs through UCCB-Net, a sophisticated network throughout rural Cape Breton. ECA takes pride in its ability to mobilize the resources of UCCB to offer a continuum of programming that addresses a broad range of needs in the community. When the community\'s needs cannot be totally fulfilled by UCCB programming, ECA attempts to form partnerships with other resources with the community. ECA has recently become very active in designing managerial training programs for large industrial clients. These programs reflect the particular scheduling needs of the client and the course content is developed and adapted to be representative for the client. ECA liaises with a variety of government agencies that provide funding for training programs. UCCB has developed a tradition of organizing conferences of a national and international scale. Many of these conferences are organized in cooperation with a variety of professional groups and organizations. In brief, we respond, therefore we are.
