Faculty of Arts
In the Faculty of Arts our mission is to educate dreamers and thinkers, politicians and political activists, scientists and artists, entrepreneurs and workers: the leaders and doers who will shape the markets and societies of tomorrow. We enable students to become articulate and informed communicators, to identify and solve problems in many different contexts, and to acquire cultural and historical sensitivities essential to participation in our international environment. The Faculty of Arts at UBC boasts some outstanding facilities, including the world-famous Museum of Anthropology and the state-of-the-art Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. The Faculty offers 50 different majors and minors leading to the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, and four majors leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree. Fields of study include the social sciences and humanities, languages, fine arts, and area studies. Students can also combine a number of study fields into one degree by completing the Interdisciplinary Studies major. Popular majors include psychology, international relations, and Asian area studies. The Faculty also offers interdisciplinary first year programs. The Foundations program provides a broad overview of the humanities and social sciences, taught by a core group of instructors who discuss themes across disciplines. Arts One takes a thematic approach to first-year. Studying in small groups led by a team of instructors from various academic disciplines, Arts One students learn how literature, philosophy, history, and politics influence each other. Both programs create a sense of membership in a community of learners.
Faculty of Science
UBC’s Faculty of Science is home to some of the most outstanding students and faculty in Canada. Science professors at UBC contribute to numerous national and international research projects, such as the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Systems, and the Canadian Genetic Diseases Network. Facilities include the Tri-University Meson Facility (TRIUMPH) – the world’s largest cyclotron for the study of sub-atomic science, a space observatory, a marine research station, and more. The Faculty offers more than 25 different majors leading to the Bachelor of Science Degree, and the flexibility to complete double majors, honours, combined honours and minors within the B.Sc. Popular majors include Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, and Psychology. A Co-op (work and learn) option is available for all majors. First-year science students can design their own program, choosing the courses they wish to take. Alternatively, they can participate in one of two interdisciplinary programs. Science One presents the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics in an integrated format. Science One is a single academically-rigorous course that incorporates lectures, tutorials and laboratories. The Coordinated Science Program (CSP) is ideal for students who have a broad interest in science and want to learn about connections between the various disciplines. Students in CSP attend lectures together, and have access to a dedicated CSP study space, which creates a smaller social and learning community within first-year science. Opportunities for interdisciplinary study continue after first-year with the Integrated Sciences major.
Faculty of Applied Science (Engineering)
UBC Engineering offers a tremendous variety of options to students who want to explore and master what makes our modern world work.
