Welcome to the English Language Centre (ELC) at the University of Victoria and to Victoria, one of the world's most beautiful small cities. Since 1970, students from over 35 different countries have come to us to learn practical English for travel, work, and further studies. The English Language Centre is one of the oldest and largest in Canada. Our location in the welcoming, safe and spectacularly beautiful city of Victoria attracts many students to us. Our excellent programs, caring staff and modern facilities on a park-like campus keep them coming back. The ELC offers daily structured language classes with professional English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers. All of our instructors are university graduates with special training and experience in teaching ESL. Our curriculum is designed to meet the needs of international students, and each instructor works individually to create a friendly and supportive environment inside the classroom. We use the most modern teaching methods and materials available so that our students get the best English experience possible. The program includes reading, writing, listening, and speaking, as well as grammar, vocabulary, and the use of English idioms. One-on-one attention is provided for every student of the English Language Centre.

Short & Long Term Intensive Programs
SHORT TERM PROGRAMS: · Offer 20 hours of formal classes a week · Include a full schedule of afternoon language workshops and cultural activities · Are designed for high beginner, intermediate and advanced students who want to improve their communication skills Program Objectives Our objective is to provide an English language program of classroom and sociocultural activities. This allows students to observe, participate in, and discuss Canadian culture using a curriculum based on cross-cultural communication. The emphasis of this program is to improve speaking and listening skills. Every effort is made to provide opportunities for students to practice their English skills, including using the Computer-Assisted Language Learning Facility and the Audio Language Lab. TWELVE-WEEK INTENSIVE PROGRAMS: · Offers 22 hours of formal classes a week · Plus 8 hours of tutorial and pronunciation clinic time · Concentrates on either communicative or academic language needs · Has six levels of instruction · Includes various free sociocultural activities · Is designed for students seeking university admission, advanced communication skills, and/or an intensive cultural immersion Instruction Levels The ELPI offers six levels of instruction from High Beginner to Advanced University Preparation. You will be tested before classes begin to place you in the correct level. Lower level programs build on your communication skills. They emphasize your oral comprehension and speaking confidence by improving your pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. At a higher level, you can choose either a communicative or an academic program, depending on your needs.
TOEFL Programs
TOEFL PREPARATION COURSES For students who require a TOEFL score for admission into a North American university or college, and would like to be better prepared for this exam. Taught by experienced instructors using the latest TOEFL preparation software and textbooks. Each course covers the four main components of the TOEFL exam including: · Listening Comprehension · Structure and Written Expression · Reading Comprehension · Essay Writing Students learn test-taking strategies and write practice examinations in both paper-based and computer-based TOEFL (CBT) formats. Program Schedule Four-week courses are five mornings per week, 80 hours total. Three-week courses are five mornings per week, 60 hours total. Ten-week courses are 2 mornings or afternoons per week, 40 hours total. Program Requirements This program is for intermediate to advanced students of English. Applicants should have a minimum TOEFL score of 450 (CBT 133) and show a good command of spoken English. At the beginning of the program, all students will write an English Proficiency Test and participate in an oral interview to determine program eligibility. Students must be at least 18 years of age. Student Evaluation Students will receive a progress report and an official Certificate of Participation at the end of each session. This is not a credit course and does not guarantee admission to the University. Accommodation Home placement is available for Programs TP2 and TP6. Dormitory accommodation on campus is available for Program TP4 only (July 7-August 1, 2003).
Specialized Programs
ENGLISH FOR TEACHERS OF ENGLISH This program is for teachers of English or teachers required to use English as the medium of instruction. Participants will: · Upgrade their English skills and · Improve their teaching skills through training in English Language Teaching (ELT) methodology, lectures, seminars, and workshops. There will be an opportunity for participants to observe a language class. ENGLISH & FINE ARTS This program is for students who want: · To improve their English beyond a basic level · Advanced North American training in the arts · An international cultural experience This special 4-week program is offered by the English Language Centre and the Faculty of Fine Arts. It combines English language studies with classes in fine arts. Classes provide students with practical experience in their area of interest. This program is for students with intermediate to advanced English skills. UAPC/CANADIAN STUDIES The University Admission Preparation Course (UAPC) is the highest level of the 12-week program. Successful completion of the course satisfies the English entry requirements for UVic undergraduate and graduate programs. The UAPC is designed to prepare you for study in an English-speaking university. The course improves your research, writing, and seminar skills and introduces you to the level of English required to succeed in regular credit courses. The UAPC provides the skills you need as a non-native speaker to participate with confidence in an academic setting. There is also an abbreviated four-week program in the summer that is combined with the Canadian Studies Program.
Technology-Based Language Programs
ONLINE WRITING COURSES These courses are offered through www.englishworld.ca. Englishworld.ca is a group of western Canadian Universities who have joined together to provide a wide range of ESL courses on the Internet. The Beginner\'s Writing course is for students who have the ability to read simple sentences and instructions. This course will help students to write clear and effective sentences and longer texts. Students will learn sentence structure, grammar, vocabulary, and effective ways to prepare and organize their writing. The Intermediate Writing course is for students who have approximately 400-level TOEFL English ability. This course will help students to write different kinds of clear, well-organized paragraphs. Students will learn how to write an outline and be introduced to a standard English essay. Students will study the writing process, learn how to edit and revise their writing, and practice complex sentence structures. CD-ROM SERIES Business English: Meetings The CD-ROM Business Meetings is for students who have intermediate English language proficiency. This CD-ROM is designed to improve students\' understanding of North American business and culture by demonstrating the language and sociocultural norms in a series of business meeting settings. Idioms This interactive English language learning resource introduces you to 192 frequently used North American idioms using audio and video as well as written text. The CD-ROM explains the cultural context and allows you to practice the idioms in realistic settings. As you practice and check your pronunciation, your oral fluency improves as you work through the 16 units.
Custom Programs
CUSTOM PROGRAMS The English Language Centre offers short-term programs for 3 - 6 weeks throughout the year for individual universities and colleges. These courses are custom designed for a minimum of 15 students. Courses combine formal classroom instruction with a variety of social and cultural activities. This allows students to observe, discuss, and participate in Canadian culture and to reinforce language skills and themes developed in class. Accommodation in either University dormitories or home placement with a Canadian family may be arranged, depending on the time of year. The English Language Centre partners with University faculties to offer special focus programs such as Executive Management Programs, upon request. The length of study is individually established to meet the needs of each participant.
