Informasi direktori lama

Edmonton Public Schools (EPS) is a large urban school jurisdiction located in Edmonton, the capital city of the province of Alberta, Canada. EPS’s International Student Program provides opportunities for motivated students from other countries to study challenging academic subjects with their Canadian peers, and at the same time receive intensive English language training. In addition to the fully accredited Alberta curriculum, both the International Baccalaureate Programme (IB) and Advanced Placement Program (AP) are available for highly capable international students. All academic programs and courses are of a high standard, and Edmonton Public Schools has an excellent reputation for effectively preparing high school students for the rigours of university or college. International students are fully integrated with their Canadian student peers, and depending on their levels of English, students may choose to attend one of the 15 high schools within EPS. Courses offered include English, mathematics, social studies and sciences. To enrich their academic life, students also take additional courses in computer technology, physical education, and fine arts, and participate in many extracurricular school-based clubs and activities where they will develop the important skills of leadership and citizenship. In Edmonton Public Schools, the academic year is comprised of two semesters; the first semester is from September to end January and the second semester is from February to end June. To maximize their learning, it is ideal for students to begin school at either the beginning of September or the beginning of February. However, EPS allows flexible entry and accepts students when they arrive. Edmonton Public Schools offers an excellent Homestay program for international students who are 15 years of age or older. Many Edmonton families are interested in welcoming international students into their homes. For details, please refer to the Homestay section under Programs on this website. Please note: Effective for the 2004-2005 school year, a non-refundable International Student Program application fee of $250CDN will be required. This fee will be due and payable at the time of application.

Homestay Program
Homestay is available for students who are 15 years of age or older. Students are matched with caring and compatible families dedicated to helping international students adjust to new social and educational systems that may differ dramatically from those in their countries of origin. Parents of students under 18 years of age must arrange for the care and guardianship of their child while studying in Canada. Students who are 18 years of age and older may reside in private accommodations, but are encouraged to live with a homestay family. Health insurance is a requirement when residing in Canada. Students must arrange for health coverage while studying with Edmonton Public Schools. The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) is the best option for international students whose study permits are issued for at least 12 months. Students can visit the AHCIP office upon arrival, with study permits in hand. Students here for less than 12 months must obtain health insurance coverage prior to their arrival in Edmonton. Information about one private company offering insurance to international students can be found on their website at: www.ingleinternational.com For all students requesting homestays, a completed Homestay Application Form must be submitted to EPS, together with a fully refundable C$2,000 emergency fund and the C$750 homestay registration fee. Refunds of the homestay registration fee (less C$50) will only be provided if students do not obtain a study permit. Once a homestay placement is made, homestay fees of C$700 per month are paid by the student’s family directly to the Edmonton homestay family. If homestay is requested for a student under the age of 18, the student must have a Canadian guardian while they reside in Canada. EPS Homestay families will provide guardianship for students in their homes.
English as a Second Language
English as a second language support is provided for students whose first language is not English and who wish to develop proficiency in the language. ESL programming is available through a variety of delivery models. Elementary students receive programming in their neighbourhood schools. At the secondary level, both district centres and local school programming are provided. District centres have ESL teacher specialists available and offer a variety of levels and courses in ESL.
International Baccalaureate Programme
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme is designed for students interested in advanced academic preparation for success in university. The IB Programme meets the curriculum demands of the Alberta High School Diploma as well as the standards of academic excellence established by international schools. IB coursework is recognized for admission by the leading universities of most countries and for advanced placement in many of them. The IB Programme encourages students to develop a full range of academic abilities. The program also promotes community involvement, intellectual creativity and critical thinking skills. Critical thinking skills are featured as preparation for post secondary study. Entrance into the IB Programme requires an honors or a near honors average in the core academic subjects in grade 9.
Advanced Placement
The Advanced Placement Program is an internationally recognized enrichment program that offers acceleration and challenge to motivated and gifted students. The grade 12 AP courses and their examinations are at a first year university level. Twelve hundred universities and colleges around the world recognize the AP Program and will grant credit or second year status to students for successful completion of AP courses. One significant advantage of the Advanced Placement Program is that students can take one or more AP courses and/or exams in subject areas of specific aptitude. Advanced Placement is programming that enables students to write challenging internationally recognized examinations in order to receive advanced standing at the university level. Students may attempt the AP examination in subjects of special interest to them while continuing with the regular curriculum.
Alternative Programs
For families and children with special interests, unique backgrounds and diverse needs, our schools have a lot to offer. Alternative programs in selected schools let students focus on areas like the arts, athletics, religion, or the basics of literacy and numeracy, while still following the provincial curriculum. Edmonton Public Schools offers over 30 such programs. International students must remember to consider their English language learning needs when choosing a school. English competency is the critical factor in choosing a program of choice or a school. Remember that not all Edmonton Public high schools provide ESL. Please contact us to discuss your language needs and your choice of program. Our staff are happy to assist you in making the right choice.
