Choose a study pathway
Start with the qualification and skills you want to gain. Compare the subject, teaching language, delivery format and location before choosing an institution.
University, college, vocational, secondary and language programs serve different goals. A familiar school name does not establish whether a particular campus or program fits your project.
- Write down your goal
- Compare at least three programs
- Check the institution’s own admission pages

Computer Animation & Graphic Design
If you have a flair for illustration, design or the visual arts, a career in computer animation or graphic design might be right for you. There are many schools in Canada where you can further your skills in these fields.
The success of movies like “Monsters Inc.” and “Finding Nemo”, coupled with the increased use of 3D imaging in regular feature films, has sparked an animation renaissance. Computer animation graduates are in demand, and Canadian schools are helping to fill this void. Students can pursue diplomas, degrees and post-graduate diplomas in computer animation in Canada. Programs focus on the principles of animation as well as the latest software for 3-D computer-based modeling and animation. Most schools are equipped with high-end workstations and studio facilities.
Studying computer animation in Canada will give you the skills to pursue a career in film, film effects, television and commercial production, and video games. You may find yourself working as a CG animator, modeler, lighter, designer, animation director or principal of a computer animation studio.
If your interests are in layout and design for print, multimedia and Internet design, then consider one of Canada’s many excellent graphic design programs. There are programs at institutions across Canada, generally focusing on both technical and creative skills. By the end of your studies, you’ll usually have a portfolio of work to showcase your skills.
Graphic design graduates create everything from logos and product labels to print ads and websites. If you’re interested in studying in this field, you might someday work as a production artist or designer for an audiovisual multimedia house, a design studio, or the graphic design department of a major company or ad agency.
