English Language Studies Program
Historical record

The original text is preserved below.

The English Language Studies Program began in 2001 and offers a variety of language training programs. The English as a Second Language program helps students improve and practice their English for everyday usage and communication. Instructors use many different topics and themes to teach reading, writing, speaking and listening. Classes are small, so students have lots of opportunity to learn and practice their English. The English for University Purposes Program is Acadia’s TOEFL Alternative. This program is for students who have been accepted by Acadia into a degree program but do not have the required TOEFL score. This course prepares the students for the English they will need for their degree program at Acadia. Students receive 25 hours of English instruction a week. Each of these programs offer 3 levels of English training (Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced). Students are given a Placement Test when they arrive on campus and are placed in the appropriate levels. All students participate in a Culture Class that is offered on Fridays. This class helps students to become familiar with life on campus, the facilities, and resources available to them at Acadia, and to have fun in the local community. Students participate in field trips to nearby historical sites and museums, try new sports, and enjoy the beautiful outdoors of Nova Scotia.
