CANADA VIRTUALLY SARS-FREE
May 14, 2003
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada – The World Health Organization today removed Toronto from its list of SARS-affected areas. There have been no new transmissions in Toronto for over 20 days, which is equal to two full incubation periods. The rest of Canada is equally safe for travelers.
Canada is among a number of countries to have brought SARS transmissions under control in recent weeks. Health Canada, the country’s national health authority, has worked tirelessly with in-country and international partners to contain SARS and to participate in the international community’s scientific investigation into the disease.
Canada and Canadian schools continue to welcome thousands of international students and visitors.
“We are delighted with the news that Canada has been removed from the WHO list and is now virtually SARS-free” says CECN President Rodney Briggs. “Canada is a preferred destination for students from around the world, and we want to assure our international guests that they are very much welcome here, and that there is no need to worry about SARS. Canada is open to them and welcomes them.”
Canadian Education Centres around the world, providing information and counselling to international students, report that generally they are receiving very few expressions of concern about SARS in Canada and students consider Canada a safe and attractive study destination. However, some students from countries still affected with SARS are concerned that they may have difficulty getting into Canada. Centres are reassuring them that they are very much welcome and that Canadian schools continue to accept student applications from these countries.
Travellers entering Canada or returning to Canada from SARS-affected countries are not required to enter into quarantine. To ensure that Canada will remain SARS-free, there are screening procedures in place in Canada’s airports; some travellers may receive information cards about SARS, and may be asked to provide contact information.
It is important to note that the overwhelming majority of Canadian schools are welcoming applications from students from SARS-affected countries. Students from these countries going to Canada are encouraged to be in touch with their destination schools for information about any measures they may be taking to protect all their students. In some cases, these students may be encouraged to come to Canada a little early so that if a few days of quarantine were to be necessary, their studies would not be interrupted.
