隨著世界邁入了一個地球村的型態，英語已成為一個全球性的共通語言，而且也是工商業界溝通瞭解所不可獲缺的一個工具，因此教育界對優秀合格英語教學老師的需求，大量的增加。其目的就是期望藉由優良英語教學的老師，使用專業教導英文的方法與技術，讓非講英文者能夠在教師使用正確及有效的方法教授之下，學習標準的英文。加拿大的大學及學院不僅有提供高品質各種有關英語教學證書和文憑的課程，也有提供英語教學研究所之課程。其研究所畢業生可獲得文學或教育碩士的學位。

加拿大英語教學研究所課程，通常為期1-2年，課程研究內容非常多樣化,包括國際語言學，英語訓練課程設計與規劃和如何運用多媒體現代化的方式來教導英文，同時多數有關英語教學的課程，學生也可依自己的需求，選擇以寫論文或上課修學分的方式，完成其碩士學位。

每所大學英語教學研究所均有其自己審核入學的標準，一般來說，申請者需主修語言學系，教育系，現代語言學系，英語系及相關科系之大學畢業者。若申請者是自大學其他科系畢業者，則需補修英語教學系之必修科目，才可申請英語教學研究所。

Graduate General Regulation 1.3.12 English Language Competence

English is the language of instruction and communication in the University. Accordingly, an applicant whose primary language is not English or whose previous education has been conducted in another language must demonstrate command of English sufficient to pursue graduate studies in the chosen field. Applicants normally will be required to achieve a satisfactory score on a standardized English test acceptable to the University. This test must include a writing component. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) including reading, writing, speaking, and listening components, is acceptable for this purpose. The IELTS (International English Language Testing Systems) is also acceptable. The minimum university requirements for test scores is TOEFL 88 with a minimum of 20 in each category (internet based exam), or TOEFL 570 and TWE 5 (paper based), or TOEFL 230 (computer based), and IELTS overall band score of 7.0; some graduate programs have higher requirements, as described elsewhere in this Calendar. In general, there are defined as minimum TOEFL scores of 550 on paper-based exam, 213 on the computer-based exam, or 80 on the internet-based (iBT) exam. In addition, the CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language Assessment) test is acceptable at a minimum score of 60.

ESL classroom teaching experience (either paid or volunteer)

An iBT TOEFL score of  98, with minimum scores of 28 in the speaking component and 24 in the listening and writing components, OR
